The Garnet That Remembered Depth

The River from our Campsite…which soooooo synchronicity was number 19….. yes, you read that correctly. 19!!!!

Our journey to Grand Forks waS, as most of our journeys tend to be, one of whimsy, of going where spirit led. I did not know much about the area, or the kettle river, or the geography on which i was standing. All we knew is that we were tired, and there was a campsite available, so we pulled in for the night — and then stayed three weeks.

garnet included mica, crystal specimen in question…

In those three weeks we gathered some of the most exquisite river rock we have ever seen, let alone been honoured to be gifted by the river nymphs. They are listed in the collection on the website, named below.

What I want to tell you is the story of the stones — and bones — that we met at the Kettle.

They begin in the Monashee Mountains, at the headwaters of the Kettle: Holmes Lake and the high snow that feeds the east fork, the West Kettle coming down to meet it, the whole watershed running south and then looping the border before it reaches Grand Forks. Ice and current tumbled them through that system

Their Majesties, the MONASHEE MOUNTAINS

Because they have travelled so far, and because they started as pelitic rock cooked until a new mineral grammar grew inside it — garnet, mica, sillimanite, the banding of stone that began to melt at its edges and did not quite finish dying — these bones hold a different kind of power than a shop crystal. Peak heat on the order of seven hundred and fifty to eight hundred degrees. Pressure on the order of six kilobars: twenty kilometres of rock overhead. Then the unroofing. Then the river. That is not a vibe. That is a history you can hold.

The Grand Forks Confluence

At our house the stones are not just rocks plucked from a river. We hold relationship with them. They are selected carefully, or they have been placed in our path — somewhat hilariously: one minute it was there, one minute it wasn’t, and then it is ready to be lifted and cared for. Happens Alllll the time.

At Grand Forks they lie in the wreckage of the Grand Forks Complex — old crust that was buried, cooked, and torn back to daylight in the early Eocene, when the mountain belt finally let the deep rocks up. Offerings were given. Then they were plucked, tenderly, from the river.

Garnet is a family, not one child. That is why she sat so cleanly in the Lunar and Venusian works. Venus does not have one face. The moon does not have one night/ These bones came from one deep cooking and the river sorted them into many bodies — darker, brighter, some still flashing mica like the mother that wont let go. they are all extraordinary in their uniqueness. not just of appearance, but of spirit too.

This collection was too beautiful to cut. I did not have the heart. I would have liked to see the banded serpentine sliced, and I may still. But they carry such raw power on their own that the stones said to me, “No. Leave us whole.” And so I have. I have cleaned them and loved them and cared for them and oiled them. Otherwise they are left raw and unfinished, still wearing the work of that deep cooking and that Eocene rising.

Land Gifted Garnet Mica and i got the whole boulder!!

Later — only a couple of weeks ago — I was gifted (I literally stumbled on when i was on a girls’ hike) a sizable piece of host mica rock at Twin Lakes which is literally at the top of the watersheds feeding the kettle river!!

I had no idea, standing there, that she would be an ancestor-kind to some of the garnets I had already lifted from the Kettle until i did some research later.

Two rooms. Two different doors. Two stones. Two stories. Two hands that clutched them gently and brought them home.

The garnets from this collection of Kettle River bones have been consecrated under multiple lunar rituals. They are not talismanically elected. They are suited for anyone who will meet them as relationship, not as merchandise.

We do not lock them to one volvas ask. They were loved as a court. Left whole. Suited to anyone who will meet them as kin, not as a label on a dish.

This is the respect. Family first. Then the vows: vows that last, work that stays in the body, a floor that holds.

Venusian Kettle River Garnet

On the lunar current that is a soft mothering: a floor that holds. The mountain kept the grain. The river finished the child. You do not have to force either one. You receive what is offered, and you keep it whole.

The collection lives here, may they serve you well.
